As explained in Order Picking and Replenishment, if the site does not require orders to be checked on the system, the packing slip is printed at the conclusion of the pick run. In that case, no further action is required other than physically packing the contents of the order.
If the site does require checking, then the packing slip is not printed until after the checking/packing step. The user makes the Checking/Packing selection on the hand-held and scans or keys the order number to be checked.
Then each product number bar code is scanned and the quantity is entered. If all products and quantities are entered according to expectations for the order, the checking function is automatically closed, and the user is notified.
If there is a difference between what was ordered and what was packed, then the checking function will not automatically close. In this case, the user can interrupt the checking function to call for a discrepancy report to be printed on the laser printer.
By reviewing the discrepancy report, the user can determine what corrective action to take: If there is a quantity overage, product is returned to the warehouse, aided by the "Where is" utility if necessary. If there is a quantity shortage, product is retrieved from the warehouse, again aided by the "Where is" utility if necessary. If product has not been picked, a picker can be directed to complete the required picking action.
Following corrective action, the user can return to the checking function. Re-scanning the offending product numbers and entering the corrected quantities will correct previous entries. If the checking function again does not close automatically, the discrepancy report may again be printed, and the actions above are repeated.
In some cases, it may be necessary to close the checking function even though there are discrepancies. This can occur if inventory was not able to be found during picking, but the order must be shipped anyway. In this case the user can force the checking function to close using the hand-held terminal.
When the checking function is closed, Access 1000 prints the packing slip. One or two copies may be printed as a system parameter. Alternatively, the user can print the packing slip by selecting the Pack/Ship function on the hand-held terminal, scan or enter the order number and enter "P" for selection of the packing slip printing function. In this case, the system checks to make sure that all items on the order have been picked before the packing slip is printed. If not, the user can either force the packing slip to print or print a discrepancy report as described above.
